Then it’s time for a new MARINE SCIENCE.
San Diego’s ocean and shoreline are amazing...home to spectacular marine life, including our state fish, the Garibaldi, and forests of giant kelp filled with sea life. Come have a grand adventure exploring the big blue.
First, you’ll practice snorkeling in UTD’s on-site heated pool. Then we’ll show you lots of the local sea life, both on the shore and in the water. Because we never touch any wild animals or fish in the ocean, we’re going to give you cameras so you can search for as many species as you can find. The team that can identify the most will win an award and bragging rights. And you will be protecting this beautiful and diverse ocean environment.
Day 1: Meet at UTD Headquarters in Sorrento Valley. First you’ll learn about local critters and where they live. Then we’ll jump in the heated pool and practice proper snorkeling techniques. (6 hours)
Day 2: Meet at ocean venue - La Jolla Shores, La Jolla Cove or Mission Bay depending on conditions. After a recap on proper snorkeling techniques and which critters we hope to see, we will hit the calm waters of Mission Bay and see our new fishy friends within their home environment. You will seek and photography* as many kinds of fish as you can find. Before your parents get you back, we will share our fish tales and talk about how our actions affect and protect the marine environment. (6 hours)
* We instantly share all photographs and stories on our Facebook/Instagram pages so that your family and friends can participate in the excitement of what you are experience in the underwater adventure.
PARENTS, THIS PART IS FOR YOU:
Upon completion of the two days your child will have gained knowledge and respect for our ocean, a link to access their photos, and a UTD Supervised Snorkeler Certificate. UTD is a dive training and certification agency. As a matter of environmental preservation, we teach that humans should never touch anything in the ocean. So your kids will be taught to look but not to touch. That’s why we give them cameras. We provide your child with all the Snorkeling equipment (Mask, Snorkel, Fins) and a camera. The Marine Science Snorkeling Camp does require registration through the Student Portal (Click Here) and the purchase of Marine Science Snorkeling camp/class materials. These are Online Materials, purchased during the registration process. The cost of the camp materials is $34.95 and includes everything they need to learn to Snorkel and identify the species they will be encountering during the camp.
****All parents must complete the registration with their children and sign the waiver and medical history form for each child.
****Cancellation policy:72 hour notice is required for rescheduling/canceling a class or camp date. UTD reserves the right to charge a $199.00 fee if this cancellation policy is not followed. We allow for a 1 time reschedule (with 72 hour notice) after that a fee will be charged for any schedule changes.
